I have owned four and have never had an guide issues or any oil consumption concerns. These are bullet proof....... renown for it....

I've had three and all of them needed top end work. First with 86 with 78k miles, second with 84 with 94k miles and third with 86 112k miles. All had been looked after and came with records and service history. There are plenty of other posts on tech related to the valve guide issue.
Rust i have always been extremely careful with my picks but I've seen a friends 87 that needed work, and there are plenty of ebay turds that need body work. Monitoring oil consumption and checking for blue smoke is part and parcel of owning a Carrera. If a top end hasn't been addressed i factor that into what I'm willing to pay. Same goes for an SC if the head studs have not been addressed. It's common sense.
