This really has become an interesting discussion......
What is a good value...... to me the equation breaks down to what are you going to do with the car...... I tend to ridicule Cars and Coffee type ownership and view 911s to be driven appropriately. So, I tend to lean towards good bones which could support hard driving. To me the intrinsic beauty of the older Porsche's (356 and AC 911) was the ability to rebuild to as new or desired condition.
In my book, the ability to buy a serviced (Invoice), solid (Carfax, galvanized 1988, 3.2L, G50), well optioned (R134AC, LSD, wide Fuchs) low mileage car (103K) at $40,000 is a very good deal (steal might be a tad overblown). This would allow the buyer roughly $8,000 to 10,000 to bring it up to the next level with out being upside down. (I believe an 85 Carrera sold for just under $60,000 with over 100,000 miles.)
Is it perfect..... no, but it is a 911 with potential that I would recommend all day long.....
My Sport Purpose style..... I would Cat Bypass, SWChip, fresh tires and install a factory sport seat for the driver side..... then a few little things..... euro lens etc.....
