I can GUARANTEE you that CA DMV has a record of smog checks, and the mileage when they were performed, on a 78 if it’s been in CA for an length of time. You might even be able to check online. Start there first. Legally, there’s supposed to be a sticker placed inside the drivers door area with the mileage and date when the odometer was replaced.
