It is part of being their chosen human. It is like thermodynamics, all the energy is conserved; they give us the intense love and devotion during their lives, but our grieving is giving it back, too equilibrium. IMHO the beauty of it is that we get to have all that love and devotion for quite some time (usually). And our grieving is very intense, but for a relatively short period of time; and then, there is only the comfort and peace of heart for having known them, forever.
Daisy has been gone going on seven months. It is a process a key part of our relationship with them.
