You ever tried drilling a hardened shaft? I can be done without too much drama but by the time he R and R'd the shocks for drilling in a press, he could simply replace.
He says he's not going there. I understand. I have a Jag XJ6 with a bad gas lift. I even have the new one in the trunk. To replace I have to remove the back seat back and the package tray. That job is not my biggest priority or thrill.
