I did the same with my own children who are all now in their 30s and 40s. They know and appreciate music back to the Big Band era, grew up listening to (now) Classic Rock, and have moved to their own type of music but still retain the knowledge and appreciation of earlier popular music.

Another Boomer here. Dad was an Air Force pilot flying cargo aircraft. They often flew a load of whatever to Japan, and came home to Hawaii mostly empty. It was no big deal to bring home a stereo and speakers right from Japan to Hawaii. Dad had a reel to reel tape recorder, and made Mix tapes for the house. Some were for parties, some were for just being home. I listened to all those songs they loved.
Dad loved Peggy Lee, and the trombone music. I grew up when the Stones, Beatles, and all the other great classic rock and roll. How could I not like it? I never cared for Country music that was popular with my older brother.
Now days at stores I hear the music they play. I have no idea what it is even called as a style or genera. Lots of women singers, repeating one phrase over and over and that is the entire song. No real difference from one "song" to the next. Whatever it is is way better than RAP. But that is just the opinion of another grumpy old white man.
