Rare exception for movie pool hall scenes. Both Cruise and Newman were well coached, actually look like good players when making shots. Cruise had never held a cue before the movie but with coaching turned into a real life good amateur. Newman already knew how to play, having learned from none other than Willie Mosconi while filming The Hustler. World Champ Mike "Captain Hook" Sigel was the movie "technical consultant". Lots of real players had bit parts...

Thanks for the backstory stuff, Paul. I remember reading about some of it but not in the detail you posted. Good stuff!
We used to have a pool hall here in town - right on our "main street" (Canal Street). Would go there to play snooker on the snooker tables with the smaller sized pockets and then when we played 8 ball at night in the local bars on the standard billiard tables, those pockets looked like freaking caverns!
We usually didn't play for money or anything - just the opportunity to keep playing whose ever's quarters were up next.
Sadly, the pool hall eventually closed up and I'm not even sure what took it's place here. Worth checking out, I guess.
