We still shoot a fair amount of skeet and trap here on the farm, but we used to shoot a lot.
Make no mistake, there is a huge gap between an 870 and a J. Purdey & Sons (even a '50/'60 870 is a vastly superior shotgun to today's 870 offering).
However, a high shot-count 870 driver is a match for an average Purdey shooter.
Seen it.
Not age related either, btw: I have seen some fairly competent shooters in there 30's and 40's get smacked around by high shoot count teenagers.

One of my daughter's teammates on the high school trap team went and bought an over/under for $3500. Went from scoring in the upper 20s to the upper 40s out of 50.
