A HS buddy had a '70 El Camino with a 402.
Actually, the Full Size (Impala, Caprice, Biscayne) was available with the 425hp 396 in 1965. It was a weird year since the 1965 Impala could be had with a 409hp/409 or a 425hp/396 as well as the other small blocks.
Yeah, I think the 425hp version was only available in the Corvette and full size cars in 1965.

Turns out they sold over 1800 of the L78 engines in '65, most in vettes but some of em were in biscaynes, bel airs and impalas. Lots of COPOs and special orders.
experts say that same engine had 375 hp when installed in "non-corvette" cars starting in 1966, because chebby was playing games so as not to hurt sales of the corvette.
Near as I can tell, the only difference between the 11 to 1 solid lifter 396 installed in an impala and one in a corvette was the corvette had a little better exhaust manifolds.
