That is really horrible. I really feel for the folks along the coast from Florida to the Carolina's.
We went through that with Hurricane Rita in 2015. Coming right on the heals of Katrina, which devastated New Orleans, we though we were doomed. It just sat in the gulf off shore and wound up to a 5, trying to make up its mind on where to go. At first it looked like somewhere between Corpus Christi and Galveston, putting us on the wet side. Everyone in the greater Houston area panicked and jumped on the highways out of town. Grid lock. Then they kept projecting it to move up the coast bit by bit scarring the heck out of us stuck in stalled traffic. Eventually it moved further up the coast to come ashore at the Texas/Louisiana state line after loosing some strength. Although it spared us the wind and rain there were plenty of smaller disasters from a bus load of nursing home residents catching fire on the highway to numerous pets dying in the heat and carbon monoxide while sitting in the back of pick up trucks stuck in traffic. When Hurricane Ike came a few years later, we were instructed to "hunker down" and ride it out if we were away from the coast and low sea level. Lets just hope it stays far enough off shore to spare everyone a lot of grief.
