Isaac Asimov wrote a story about the future (of course) in which gasoline was super expensive, so no average person had gas powered cars. The main character in the story was a car guy that had kept his car, and loved to drive it around driving fast when everyone else was on bikes. The plot twist was when he got back home he lamented that he was going to have to spend a lot of time winding up the giant rubber band powerplant. I have not read the story in over 40 years so I may have some details wrong.

Hey, I read that story too. I think it was closer to 50 years ago though.
