When I had John Dougherty grind the cams for my 964, I asked him about the cam break in period. Because, I know that the process of loading and unloading the rings is important for proper ring seating, and the longer you run the engine at a steady, unloaded RPM, the more polished the cylinders get and the window for ring seating closes. John said, "just don't let it idle for the first while. Drive it however you like, but don't let it idle."
