Company A may have had an epiphany..omg he is leaving.
One thing to consider every upper mgt guy thinks about advancing his career without regard for the companies well being. In other words they are there for the betterment of themselves and not the company. Maybe that realization on their part is why they got that corner office with the big window and desk.
Consider that they may just be thinking this threat counter offer stuff is called negotiation.
