Let's not forget the Pro "Stock" class in drag racing, either. I think Grumpy Jenkins kind of killed it with his Vega in the early '70's. He was the first to build a dedicated tube frame race car inside of the factory sheet metal. At lest back then they were required to maintain the factory body shape. Today, the windshields and rear windows lay so flat, and the roof is so low, they resemble one of the old chopped top hot rods.

That aside, NASCAR has been well and truly in its death throes for years. Pissing off their base audience sure as hell is not going to help.
