Supe's looking for a whisky which isn't too sweet and you guys are pushing bourbon?
You're going to get so many different opinions it will be tough to make a decision. Here are some of my suggestions, depending on what type of flavor you're after.
For something on the dry side with no peat smoke try Bruichladdich. Their "The Classic Laddie" is their entry level bottle, reasonably priced at around $40. Can't miss it on the shelf as it 's in a distinct turquoise bottle.
Something with a bit more bite, a little more smoky but not overly peated, dry with a hint of sweetness, maybe slightly salty, try Talisker 10. Around $50 depending on where you shop. You may also want to look for Bowmore 12. Similar dry smokiness, probably not as refined as the Talisker, but maybe $45 or so.
Want something with a punch? Based on your preference for IPA's I'm guessing you like big, robust flavor. Peaty whisky definitely isn't for everyone - you love it or hate it. If you want to give it a go try Port Charlotte 10 at around $65, or a Caol Ila 12 at about the same. These will have a lot of peaty smoke.
A significant contributor to a whisky's flavor depends on the cask. Bourbon, by law, is matured in fresh American oak casks. This gives the whisky a distinct sweetness which is why I'm surprised people are mentioning bourbon. Scotch, particularly the ones above, tend to use used bourbon casks where the initial fill(s) removes most of the sweetness.
