Hood shocks were shot when I bought my car nearly 15 years ago. They'd hold on a really, really hot day - but no other time.

Pretty much the first job I did on the car after acquiring it - I did the screen wash next, but the hood needed to stay open to work on them... I fitted Stabilus HDs from our host -still on the car and still working perfectly; about 50,000 miles on them now, and the hood has been up and down countless times...

After I fitted them, I read a neat idea in tech; just drill through the dead shock and use a hairpin cotter pin to keep the hood up. Which is how I'd do it now - except they're still working perfectly...

For example https://www.mcmaster.com/hairpin-clips - about $3 in stainless...
