I thought the new box type are way cheaper then the motor/generator rotary units
and use less power in the conversion ? esp for smaller 1-2-3 hp units
how many amps / hp is your pump ?

I don't think it's appropriate for the box type (static) in my application. I am running a well pump that is 960' deep. That's also why i'm staying away from VFDs.
Pump is 3 HP, 30 amp locked. I'm wanting to switch from my 480v 3 phase genset to a 120/240 genset I have on hand so I can use it for some residential power as well. No utilities are availible, however, a private out of state company is putting in 30 wind turbines a few miles down the road to connect to the grid. So alternative means are a possibility, and I like to have the option should I change my mind in the next few years. I know I will buy a new 30kw genset next year just to have the flexibility that my current genie does not..
