The later 964 models, ('93-'94), nearly sunk them. There was a recession at the time and the list price of the cars had crept up from currency fluctuations to pretty crazy MSRPs. The 928 and 944 variations were older than dirt and about to die, plus their prices were outrageous. No one was buying them.

The 993, (plus a rebounding economy), saved them. They lowered the list price significantly from the last 964s to the 993. They fazed out the 928 and 944 cars and of course the Boxster landed in '96, (as a '97 model), and the rest is history.

The 964 of course has gone from being the red-headed stepchild of 911s to highly desirable, w prices to match. The last years of the 964 were significantly better cars than the early ones and are highly sought after but there is close to zero supply because they hardly sold any of them at the time. In 1986, a record sales year for Porsche before the water cooled cars, they sold 30k cars in the U.S. In 1994, I think they sold 3k cars.

Anyhow...just some Porsche trivia since this used to be part of a Porsche forum.
