It has to be a challenge to balance the performance to make a fair race between a Front engine BMW, Mercedes, mid engine Ferrari, Lambo, or now the Vette and the venerable 911 with the engine where is should be! 
The 911 got its first class win at Daytona in 1966. The guy drove it to the track, put on race tires, added a roll cage, and the needed lights for the numbers, and drove it and won.
