Thank you all so much for the tips and advice, I hadn't considered a lot of the points you brought up and am now thinking more broadly about the car and its future. I live in the greater LA county area, so there are tons of good paint shops around I'm sure. But if anyone knows of a great one they prefer, I'm all ears.
I guess I have to do more soul-searching about it, but in the past couple weeks (and since I've waxed the car) the black's starting to grow on me. Plus, media blasting the entire car means disassembling the entire thing, and that opens up a huge can of worms. On the other hand, it's a 205,000 mile car that should probably get that level of attention at some point and I just noticed a gouge in the paint between the fender and the main body, toward the windshield. Plus, in the process of things, it seems like a last step; better to fix the mechanical issues first, I guess. Need to rebuild first and second gear, probably replace the clutch, fix a slow oil leak on the engine, fix alignment, fix the radio, fix the electronics. All this said it runs and drives great, it just needs the details.
