The USAF has been seriously considering a light attack aircraft for the last few years - not sure if they'll ever actually select one and put it into production. Many people agree this is what the Air Force needs (it would compliment the A-10, not replace it).
One of the major contractors in the middle east, discussing aerial support for troops on the ground a couple of years ago, stated: "we need Skyraiders" referring to the A-1 Skyraider used in the '50 and '60s.
The Piper Enforcer (turbine Mustang, above), would have been a great choice at the time (back in the '80s) but the AF nixed the idea. One of the (lame) reasons was that the AF had no ability for tail wheel training. That cold have easily been handled by a private contractor.
It will never happen but it would be great if the Enforcer was put into production as a much needed light attack aircraft today.
