Most of the units that plug into a phone have very limited sensitivity. They are just cool toys. If you really want to do it as a side business, it would be like trying to turn pro photographer with just a iPhone.
We used the 50 grand 1024x768 cameras for a while for a clients projects. It was really cool to play with and a pain to use to get the information needed by the client.
We shot one project with the big boy FLIR gear. It had to run for 5 minutes for the sensor to cool off to very low temperatures, and it was over 300 grand. B&W only, but man it could see some detail. It had to be hooked up to a laptop to run so not real practical for simple use.
The pixel resolution of infrared is all very low.
Expect to spend several to many grad to get a unit that is not just a toy and can do professional level work.
