The fuse box is definitely in the way. I unbolted it and see it aside as much as possible to get to that hose. It was quite difficult otherwise.
It's very possible your overfilling it may have had something to do with gas being in that hose. From what I understand, these are vapor hoses only and shouldn't carry gasoline, but I could be 100% wrong
I replaced all the fuel lines in my car and was still getting a fuel smell in the cabin. You said yours seems to have dissipated, but if it comes back, do a smoke test to see where the leak is. Had my mechanic do that for me and he found some holes at the top of the tank (this was caused by a DAPO who drilled holes into the tank when he mounted an amp). Sometimes the fuel filler neck itself can develop leaks too.
