Hah, the underlying spider frame can rust quite badly, especially up front if the drain holes get plugged with gunk!

Sounds like something was wrong with it. Mine shifts like butter. They were going 0-60 in under 7 seconds which was very fast for cars of the era but the twin-cam motors are by no means torquey but they don't need to be when the car weighs 1500 pounds.
