My former boss has done the Smithsonian tours and spoke highly off them. (And also speaks highly of the Steve Austin tours)

If you like the tour environment of not having to worry about where to go, or what to do, it seems like a great setup.

I'm too type A and love planning trips for myself. Everything on the tour can be done without the tour group, just takes some prearrangement, plus gets you a bit more freedom of itinerary.
