The reason it took a plunge into the water is that too much of the lift fan was dedicated to skirt pressure and not enough to actual lift
in my opinion.
Meaning the super rigid over inflated skirt acted like any other hard hull when it came into contact with water and parasitic drag pulled it down.
There simply wasn't enough cushion pressure under the craft, and just enough air escaping underneath on hard surfaces to act as an air bearing.
The craft was overpowered and over weight in many respects.
Top performing hovercraft are all about lightness compared to surface area, and not power to weight ratio as with land vehicles/cars.
