I've been in a pick up since the mid 80's.My current ride is an '06 Taco that is ready to turn over 200K. It's a half ton 4x4 and I've hauled all manner of loads. Once carried the R1100S to Arkansas for work to be done and the Duc often hitches a ride in the back.
I thought about replacing it when I retired but like the OP I nearly had a cardiac event when I saw the prices, even on used Tacos. So I'm maintaining it as best I can.
