Huh? I think there were some reasonably good guitarists out there before the hair metal shredders came along. There was this guy out of Seattle named Hendrix who was pretty good. Another guy from Britain named Clapson, or Clapper, or something. He was pretty good too. Of course, he couldn't play fast, so they called him Slowhand. But he was still passable.
Shredders to me are like people who do gymnastics and think it is dancing. The equivalent of someone who can do 30 pushups, 30 jumping jacks, and 30 squat thrusts all in one minute. It ain't art, it's muscle memory.
