The tires blew their heat plugs and deflated like they are designed to when they over heat instead of exploding catastrophically. Normally they don't dump fuel at that low altitude when they don't have to. LAX is plenty long to allow an overweight landing. I think they did the right thing. Got the plane safely on the ground as fast as they could.
