Since we are all sharing opinions, here’s mine. I’ve always stayed away from Cabs for the following reasons:
- Added complexity resulting in higher maintenance costs
- Added weight due to additional bracing and the mechanical top
- Prefer the look of coupes and Targas
Having said all that, my two current Porsches are the Boxster Spyder and a 964 Targa so yes I do enjoy the open top experience. The Spyder has a simple top that I can easily repair/replace without significant expense or fuss. It’s design is so simple that there really isn’t much that could break. It’s also lighter than the equivalent coupe and I think it looks better.
The Targa top is also relatively simple and doesn’t require much to maintain it. I recently had the top rebuilt to the tune of $1800, not a major expense every 25 years. I know the look isn’t for everyone, I personally love it and there’s nothing else like it. It doesn’t weigh more than a Coupe either, total weight with 1/2 tank of fuel was 3000 lbs so the only real drawback is less rigidity and wind noise when the top is up.
