The oil sump you are talking about is one way of doing it, but I have never used it due to the low underslung position that you described. The offroad dune buggies use that model.

The other one, the "Tuna Can" looks like a .....well, a Tuna Can..... It is about two inches tall, the same circumference as the oil strainer. What it does is keeps about a 1/4 quart of oil in the reservoir and has an extended oil pickup. It is not thick enough to get banged by road hazards, as it does not stick down as far as the engine mount.

It is used by many and it works.
