Sorry for this news about your long-term friend--especially on this day. I wouldn't think anyone here could offer an accurate opinion of disease process or lifespan remaining for this poor fellow.
That said and although you didn't ask, I think the real question for you is what can you do? Maybe go see your friend as soon as is feasible. It won't make any difference for his diagnosis or prognosis but that's what friends will do.
