Lots of factors involved with slick condition driving. Open diff, old tires, and bad driving have no chance if it is slick. I remember one of my worst drives home was in the El Camino with the peg leg open differential, cheaper tires of the era 25 years ago, and an ice storm with an 1/2 inch of ice, and then rain on top. Nothing slicker than wet ice. It was a real challenge just to stay upright when walking. It took me many hours just to get home. I had to park in the street, and I put the car in park and turned off the ignition, and the Elky just oozed sideways right up against the curb. I had a hell of time getting up the slope of the yard into the house. I spread salt on the driveway and after a few hours the ice melted enough for us to get into the garage.
I installed a limited slip rear end in the Elky right after that. And the tires of today are way better. Lots more expensive, but way better.
Tomorrow is supposed to be high 30s and raining. I am staying home. Right now it is 68 degree, clear skies, and just a slight breeze. Perfect winter weather! I had to run the air conditioner when I was out and about recently.
