At my old bachelor pad house I had a very steep hill for a driveway. It leveled out just at the edge of the garage. It was simple impossible to get my 914 up that hill with any ice or snow if I could not get a decent running start at it. I had to turn 90 degrees from the street, then hit a steep incline. With more than a little snow or ice I could not make the turn and did not have any speed for momentum to get up the hill. I was a cheap (read very broke) dude, so I ended up at a boat place, and bought a small manual crank boat winch with enough cable to reach to the end of the driveway.
I could hook the cable to the tow hook on the front of the 914, and crank it right up the hill into my garage. My neighbors would all come to watch me do it. It took 10 minutes of slow cranking. It worked like a charm on a 2,000 pound 914. I would never try it on a bigger car. My El Camino simple would not fit in the garage. I pulled it in to the point the front bumper was touching the back wall, and the rear end stuck out over a foot.
The 914 was small enough I had room to jack it up, drop the engine and transmission out, and do a clutch job in the garage space behind the 914. I had to do that by myself, in one weekend as it was my only transportation.
