Maybe some of the other maintenance they did required that they get in there? For a vehicle that has been sitting for 30 years, I have no doubt that lots of stuff needs attention, but I wouldn't think the valves would be one of those things. Tires, anything rubber, flexible or soft, gaskets, rubber fuel and brake lines, seals for the HV(A/C), oil tube o-rings, yes, but the valves should be fine, right?

And don't get me wrong, that speedster may be one of my least favorite of the '84-89 cars, but if it was handed to me, or made available for a crazy (the other kind of crazy), I'd be happy to own it. It's like pizza and sex, even the worst is still pretty great.
