SoCal driver: When I tested synthetic oil in my airplane and air cooled motorcycle (88s sportster bored to 1200) they both ran 25 degrees cooler. I think you can expect a longer lasting engine even with water cooled. If there is less heat there obviously is either less friction or a better cooling ability by the oil in air cooled engines.
