Ideally you want a fossil or nuclear unit to run 24/7. What tears them up is shutting down and starting up. The first time I saw a 200,000 run-hour gas turbine in our shop I thought it was only a couple years old. I was so used to seeing units that ramp up and down everyday that were completely worn out.
