The first pics of Evel were standard iron Sportsters. He had approached HD prior and they wanted nothing to do with him. It was only when his jumps started being televised that they reconsidered. He did move up to the XR later when the standard Sportster weighed too much and lacked the power he needed for the ever increasing jump distances.
Other than supplying him with bikes, parts and support I don't remember any other ( read cash) endorsement money. It was a huge payoff for HD. They got a lot of mileage and money from that.
