A guy I knew who worked in one of our tool fab shops bought one of the old Nanook fuel altereds. He drove it at a few nostalgia drags and managed to so completely terrify himself that eventually he only hauled it around to county fairs and the like, where he would just start it and let it idle, doing the throttle blip thing. Amortized over the period he owned it, he figured it cost him several thousand dollars every time he started it.

I think IHRA or AHRA was (maybe still is) running a modern fuel altered class. I do remember seeing them a few years ago. Not the same at all - basically modern funny car chassis with Fiat, Anglia, or T-bucket bodies, with big wings on the front and back. Way too long of a wheelbase, way too much aero, way too "safe". Not nearly as exciting as when we were kids.

Fuel altered trivia - John Force drove Wild Willy's "Winged Express" when he was a young man.
