Wow Paul...that stinks!! Popcorn smell is strange (could be simple electrical problem or extreme overheating). I'd do as Jim2 and others suggested (check the alternator, look for debri in engine oil/filter, leak test, etc).
Meanwhile have a serious talk with your wife and kids to see how they feel about your/their car. If they don't care and want you to get rid of it then that's a bummer (you'd get cents on a dollar). On the other hand if they want you to keep it then at least put it away until your funds are available for engine rebuild.
