No reason the gun wouldn't work from being submerged. The water isn't going to harm the mechanism. You just don't submerge the ammunition. That is stored down below and brought on deck when needed. That is not to say you wouldn't need to allow the wtaer to drain or dry before firing. and they are not machine guns they are small canons.
