My MIL grew up on a farm. She says she was camping for the first 16 years of her life. No electricity, and no running water, and an outhouse in the back yard.
I have been to some farms as a kid and they were still using an outhouse. Not a pleasant experience.
They did have toilet paper however.
My grandmother also grew up on a farm with no indoor plumbing. She said she was 14 when her dad had made enough money to pay for indoor plumbing. He told her that they were going to have a toilet inside the house, and she was horrified. Her reply was "dad, what about the smell!". She had no concept of a flush toilet, and had never seen one.
