Really I kinda feel rims are snap on sheet metal trim rims, not wheels.
I am not trying to be argumentative, I am just curious because to me they are not synonyms, they are different things.

To me, the snap on trim pieces are beauty rings or trim rings, not rims. Old wood spoke wheels on cars from the 1920's and earlier often had tires mounted on steel rims that bolted on to to the edge of the wheels. And, the decorative caps in the middle were hub caps. That said, I recently looked at a website from a European parts dealer and it referred to aluminum wheels as rims! Oh well!
