Last I knew with cable you were fighting for whatever bandwidth the infrastructure could support between your house/buisiness and the gateway out to the world and your actual "purchased speed" was put into effect at the service point/gateway. And of course, you'll never go faster than the slowest point in your whole route.... So if the line you are on can support 1000gb of traffic, and there are 10 of you on it and you each buy the 150gb dedicated plan...
With DSL, it is a direct to your service point with no contention until you exit the gateway to the rest of the internet.
