because of salary caps in NE, he was costing the team about $13 mil plus the $20 million salary they offered ($3 mil less than he got last year).
he said nope, I'm tired of being paid less than some ****ty QBs out there.
NE said best we can do, we're handcuffed with the salary cap deals we made last year.
On top of that they only offered him a one year contract cause he's so old and he took O'fense to that.
See the thing is this: Belechick makes those calls and he is NOT sentimental. I know, hard to believe.
He calls it like he sees it and does what is right for the team and has no problem saying adios to ANYONE.
Belechick realized that Brady is an injury risk and although he helps the team, he is actually worth MORE in trade than is he in keep.
So they put him up for highest bid and got a fish to bite.
Now they can use that $33 million/yr plus whatever tampa bay pays them to buy gooder younger top performers.
Remember this: the last few QBs NE had as back-up to Brady did really really well and won lots of games when Brady was out, and then got sold to other teams for big $$$$.
a couple of of em are still playing, one went to the superbowl last year iffn I recall correctly.
Belechick and co. can win with just about any QB.
Here are just some of his back-ups:
Drew Bledsoe (famous superbowl guy)
Damon Huard went to cheeeefs
Doug Flutie, inventor of the hail Mary
Matt Cassel, went 11-5 when Brady was hurt and went to cheeeefs also
Vinny Testaverde sounds awful familiar. Tampa bay maybe?
Jimmy Garoppolo went to niners, done pretty good there so far
Jacoby Brissett went to colts and took over for the luck-y guy who bailed
