It appears that Covidien bought Newport, and Covidien was then acquired by Medtronic. And perhaps Covidien and/or Medtronic could not find good business with the Newport design(s).
I have been in situations similar to that in business in the medical equipment space.
There can be challenging dynamics at the intersections between capitalism, healthcare and public health.
