If I make it in a pot, I measure with my finger. Thickness of the finger, not the distance to the first knuckle.

If I make it in a rice cooker, I use the scale on the side.

I vary the water a little according to how fresh the rice is (NEW CROP!) and the type of rice and what I'm going to do with it.

I make better rice in a plain old pot but I do get busy sometimes and burn it, which pisses me off to no end. No chance of that with a rice cooker, which is why I even have one at all. I don't leave the cooker on warm for very long after cooking the rice, as I don't like the crust that some cultures seem to prize.
