Do your research, and plan accordingly (give yourselves plenty of extra time too!).
I wouldn't miss the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam (pretty damn cool), Yosemite, Death Valley, and the Highway 1 drive. California is very diverse, in climate, scenery, and people. You'll sample a bit of each if you drive to these places.
Enjoy the trip, and try to relax.
