Double check polarity, or even just try it the other way? And also continuity right to the board.
I wouldn't expect Al to have fiddled with the pots, there are just too many variables. Getting a clean and reliable crank (or cam) position is always going to be the toughest part of any EFI setup. They never work first try in my (limited) experience. On my microsquirt setup I had to solder a pullup resistor into the board to make it read the distributor pickup in a honda. (Also a VR but different hardware.
You aren't going to "fry" anything by fiddling with the pots. Just keep track of your movements carefully so you can get back where you started.
