It's probably that the men are drinking it with ice, but the women are drinking it with water or soda.

We took the kids out to a swanky ($$$, but not much atmosphere) restaurant about a year ago. They asked my son-in-law if he wanted his bourbon with one ice cube. He said "sure".
I was pretty entertained when I saw that the single spherical block of ice was $1. I was at a bar a while back and it somehow came up while chatting with the bartender. He did say that the bar paid $.75 per sphere for those from the vendor where they got them. It was less irritating then.
